At Numadx, innovation drives everything we do. Our journey with pneumatic cushioning began in 2007 through a groundbreaking collaboration with Rawlings Sporting Goods. This partnership paved the way for a technological breakthrough that redefined athlete protection.
Unlocking the Potential of Pneumatic Cushioning
Early research into pneumatic cushioning revealed its unique advantages over traditional polymer foams, particularly in energy absorption and return. The technology demonstrated immense potential for enhancing human performance and comfort, with applications far beyond midsole cushioning in footwear.
As awareness of mild traumatic brain injuries and concussions grew, the opportunity to apply pneumatic cushioning to head protection became clear. With its superior energy management and ability to customize performance through adjustable inflation pressure, pneumatic cushioning emerged as an ideal solution for athlete safety.
Recognizing this potential, Rawlings provided funding in 2008 to support the development of a pneumatic football helmet liner. This investment enabled the design, prototyping, and testing of the world’s first pneumatic helmet liner, setting a new benchmark for innovation in sports safety.
The Development of a Game-Changing Helmet
The development process involved benchmarking our pneumatic liners against the top football helmets in the industry. Rigorous testing was conducted using advanced equipment in collaboration with experts in helmet design and manufacturing. By replacing the energy-absorbing liner of a leading helmet with the pneumatic liner, performance comparisons were made.
The results were groundbreaking. The pneumatic liner outperformed the competition, demonstrating superior energy absorption and impact mitigation. Inspired by these results, Rawlings made the strategic decision to enter the football helmet market. By 2011, the Rawlings Quantum and Rawlings Quantum Plus helmets were introduced, featuring the patented Active Impact Absorption (AIA) technology.
Industry Recognition and Impact
The introduction of the Virginia Tech STAR Rating System in 2012 provided an independent evaluation of football helmet performance. The Rawlings Quantum Plus helmet, featuring pneumatic cushioning, achieved the highest possible 5-STAR rating. It was one of only three helmets to achieve this distinction, setting a new standard for athlete protection and concussion mitigation.
This recognition positioned Rawlings as a leader in football helmet technology. The comfort and performance of these helmets drove widespread adoption among NFL players, collegiate athletes, and youth players. By 2013, over 300 NFL players were using helmets featuring pneumatic cushioning, including notable athletes such as Tony Romo, Arian Foster, and Dennis Pitta.
A Defining Moment in Sports History
One of the most iconic moments came during Super Bowl XLVII, where Baltimore Ravens tight end Dennis Pitta scored a pivotal touchdown wearing a Rawlings helmet with pneumatic cushioning. Remarkably, his opponent, Hall of Famer Patrick Willis of the San Francisco 49ers, was also wearing the same technology. This moment highlighted the widespread trust in pneumatic cushioning among elite athletes and underscored its impact on the field.
A Legacy of Innovation
The development of pneumatic cushioning marked a significant milestone in sports safety and performance. The technology not only addressed the critical need for improved head protection but also elevated the comfort and performance for athletes at every level.
Today, Numadx builds on this legacy. By applying the principles of pneumatic cushioning to new challenges, such as enhancing comfort and performance in footwear, we continue to advance the boundaries of innovation. Our commitment to science, design, and performance ensures that every step forward is a step toward a better future.
